What People are Saying About Jay

“Jay will provide you not only with extremely useful cooking techniques, but a rich cultural background and understanding as to how this cuisine developed. So great to be able to learn about so many aspects from this humble instructor!”

–Douglas R.

“I've very much enjoyed Phipps virtual cooking classes. They were a very bright spot in a time when most activities were on hold. Chef Jayashree – I appreciate how much you teach us! I've joined 3 Indian classes virtually, so far, and they are so appealing because each has had at least one recipe that I've made multiple times since class. I've been a regular shopper of Patel's in Monroeville for years but these classes have exposed me to ingredients I haven't used before, but have always been curious about.”

– Emily Whitney

“Popping Mustard Seeds is exactly what you will do!! Jayashree is a fantastic instructor. I have taken classes both in-person and online and have learned so many cooking techniques and easy-to-make recipes at home.”

–C. Martin

"One of the nicest experiences at Phipps was attending an interesting, informative, and hands-on class in Indian vegetarian cooking, taught by a lovely Indian woman, Jayashree Iyengar, of Popping Mustard Seeds, LLC. It was so much fun that I convinced my husband to attend future classes with me. He had tasted the meals that I recreated at home, with the recipes that were provided at each class. He was sold on joining in the educational, and fun experience with me. Our instructor Jayashree taught us not only how to prepare delicious meals, but offered lots of insight into the different types of Indian cooking, and the nutritional value of the many meals that we created. To this day we have a shelf of Indian spices and recreate the meals often. They are wonderful."

Poori with Sagu is a special treat in our house since I only make it once in a blue moon! Can’t believe it is a simple trick to keep the puris puffed. Just add a spoonful of cream of wheat (sooji) while preparing the dough. I was so pleased
Two of my favorite comfort foods: South Indian style cabbage and Rasam.
Cabbage: wash and shred the cabbage like you would for coleslaw. Set aside. Heat 1 tsp oil in a 10-12 inch wide skillet; when hot, add mustard seeds; when it begins to pop(wil
